The Rise Earns Structures Award as Construction Enters New Phase - Oct 2024
Last month, The Rise was honored with a 2024 Structures Award by the Silicon Valley Business Journal, recognizing its progress in 2024 as one of the region’s top real estate development stories. We are especially proud to share this award with the City of Cupertino. In fact, the project’s achievements this last year are the result of a joint effort by the City and Sand Hill Properties to find ways to overcome a gloomy real estate climate, to clear complex master planning hurdles, and to position The Rise so infrastructure construction can move forward.
To highlight the achievement of this award and the project’s significance to Cupertino, the City produced a video to celebrate this milestone year for The Rise.

We thank the City for their support and dedication. Over the years, Sand Hill Properties has remained committed to our shared vision for the future of the Vallco site: a fully connected city center where community, culture, and nature can converge. This long-planned vision creates a new social heart for Cupertino, a vibrant, walkable “ten-minute city” with a thriving retail core, flexible workspaces, and a diverse residential neighborhood with an array of immersive outdoor spaces.
What’s Next
Later this month, we will be launching the next significant phase of development: the beginning of a “horizontal” work phase for the portion of the project site on the west side of Wolfe Rd. This work includes grading and utility infrastructure installation and will literally lay the groundwork for vertical construction in the future once market conditions improve. This will indeed be a major milestone, bringing us one step closer to realizing our collective vision for a fully connected and thriving downtown district in Cupertino, and the new homes, parks, and retail that comes with it.

As we transition into the project’s next stage, we are reminded and comforted that The Rise is the product of nearly a decade of collaboration, including innovative planning, community feedback, and compromise. It’s never easy, and current market dynamics complicate the path forward, requiring even greater resilience and creativity to navigate these critical next steps. We must remain focused on top priorities and are grateful to the City of Cupertino and to our neighbors in the community for your continued input, passionate dialogue about the best solutions for Cupertino, and years of commitment to the idea of Vallco’s renaissance. As we move ahead with construction this fall, we look forward to the day we can deliver a downtown destination that will be the envy of our region and worthy of this Cupertino community.
